US changing its tune on Burma

This week’s GPM forecaster is on the US’ policy change on Burma. I think I’m going to write a situation report on the growing naval arms race between China and India. Those two governments are hard at work securing real estate for naval installations around the Indian ocean- one of the world’s key energy shipping lanes.

A note on President Obama’s speech @ UN

President Obama’s endorsement of worldwide nuclear curbs is very clever in regards to US-Russian relations.

It’s obvious that thawing out the relationship with Moscow is a priority for President Obama. Why else would he run the political gauntlet on dropping European missile defense, irregardless of whether it was a practical move or not. Anyways, the speech gave me the impression that it was written with the Russians in mind.

BRIC countries energy report up on GPM

I wrote a special report on BRIC countries energy security over on the GPM. Very important, if not slightly boring information given the current state of energy prices. Just wait until prices spike again, then everyone will be sad they ever doubted the riveting data within!

Update: No sooner had I written that energy independence allows Russia to have an ambivalent attitude towards its Mideast allies than Moscow starts sending signals that it may be down for a new round of Iran sanctions. If this comes to pass, then it’s truly a not-so-transparent tit-for-tat on missile defense.

Hegemonic decline or practical diplomacy?

President Obama continues to tear down the house that George Bush built; this time firing a volley at the golden calf that is missile defense. This move, despite any sound rationale behind it, will surely be seized on as weak.

Life at the end of history

This is the first of what is sure to be many stillborn article pitches. It definitely was fun to write though. This version is missing a section on apathy, as I had to cut to keep the word count down.

NYT article pretty much sums up the mental ‘clusterfun’ of the Bush years

I came across this article by David Barstow while conducting research today. For anyone who watched CNN during the Bush years and got the feeling that something wasn’t right, like most analysts had been hypnotized before coming on air; you’re vindicated!
